How much does it cost to replace transmission fluid? (2026 prices)
Quick answer: a transmission fluid change costs $294 to $356 on average nationally, according to RepairPal (September 2026), with labor $131 to $192 and parts around $163. Kelley Blue Book puts a flush at around $165 to $290. In Phoenix, KBB’s figures for five popular cars run from $228 to $527, depending on the car and the shop.
Written by Mark Dannunzio, co-owner and ASE-certified lead technician at Shift Masters Transmissions in Phoenix. Mark and Ken and their team have rebuilt thousands of transmissions, and do fluid changes and flushes at the shop on North 43rd Avenue.
(Opens wallet. Moth flies out. Closes wallet.) If you’re here, someone just told you your transmission fluid is due and you’d like to know how bad the damage is. Our guide to how often to change transmission fluid called this Gary’s spa day, so today we’re reading the spa menu.
Good news first: Gary’s spa day is one of the cheaper things that can happen to a transmission. (Bad news: Gary has expensive taste in fluids. More on that below.)
Transmission fluid change cost in Phoenix: 5 popular cars
Kelley Blue Book’s parts-and-labor estimates, read with KBB set to Phoenix ZIP 85009 in October 2026. These are not our prices. Click a car to see KBB’s figure for your own ZIP.
Notice the Corolla’s range is huge. (Gary’s cousins are not all on the same budget.) That spread comes from who does the work, which we’ll get to in a minute.
Transmission fluid change vs flush: the cost difference
First, they are different jobs, not two names for one thing. (I also thought a flush was a fancy change. I was wrong, which is my brand.) Toyota says a change drains the pan, replaces “30 to 40 percent of the fluid,” and fits a new filter, while a flush “replaces nearly 100 percent of the old fluid.”
So a flush uses a lot more fluid, yet the sources price it close to a change. (Gary is confused. So am I. Welcome to car pricing.) The honest answer is that the right one depends on your fluid and your car, which is why our fluid change and flush service starts with a look before anyone picks.
What pushes the price up
Heat matters for how often you pay, not how much each time. Toyota lists “frequent exposure to severe weather conditions” and “stop-and-go traffic” as reasons for shorter intervals, and a Phoenix summer commute is basically both. (Gary books more spa days in July. Gary is not wrong.)
Dealer or independent shop?
You’d assume the independent shop always wins. (I assumed that too. See previous note about my brand.) In KBB’s Phoenix figures, it did for the 2018 Camry: $372 to $436 at a dealer versus $280 to $330 at an independent. Same story for the 2019 Corolla: $448 to $527 at a dealer versus $280 to $330 independent.
But for some other cars in KBB’s Phoenix data, the two ranges were close, or the independent range came out higher. So the only reliable move is to get a real written quote for your car. (Gary would like it in writing. Gary has trust issues.)
What skipping it can cost
Here’s the comparison that makes a fluid change look cheap. RepairPal puts the average transmission replacement at $6,238 to $6,764, and KBB says to expect “an average of $2,900 – $7,100 for a new transmission.” (That’s a lot of spa days. Roughly twenty, if Gary’s counting.)
Fluid isn’t the only reason transmissions fail, of course. But AAA notes that sealed transmissions with no easy dipstick access aren’t “actually maintenance-free,” and our rebuild and replacement cost guide has the full picture if you want to be properly scared.
What we see in the shop
Sometimes a fluid service is the whole fix, and the bill drops a long way. (Best kind of plot twist.) Michelle Cosby was quoted 5k for a rebuild elsewhere:
“My car was not shifting into 4th gear and was quoted 5k for a transmission rebuild. I took it to mark, had him inspect it, and it turned out it just needed a fluid flush and the issue was fix. went from 5k to $500. Highly reccomend him and his team!”Michelle Cosby, Shift Masters customer
And Kathy Lee said Mark and the team “gave me an amazing price on getting my fluids replaced.” We don’t publish prices, because the right service depends on your car and its fluid, so we check first and you get a written estimate before we start. Not sure if yours is due? Our fluid color chart and how to check the level guides will tell you, and financing is available for parts and labor.
Transmission fluid cost questions
How much does it cost to replace transmission fluid?
RepairPal puts the national average for a transmission fluid change at $294 to $356, as of September 2026, with labor $131 to $192 and parts around $163. Kelley Blue Book's national figure is $150 to $175. Prices vary by car, fluid type and shop.
How much does a transmission flush cost?
Kelley Blue Book says to expect around $165 to $290 for a transmission fluid flush, and Jiffy Lube quotes $125 to $250. A flush uses more fluid than a drain-and-fill: Jiffy Lube says 12 to 22 quarts versus 5 to 7.
How much does a transmission fluid and filter change cost?
RepairPal puts a transmission filter and fluid change at $621 to $785 on average, more than a fluid change alone because of the extra labor to drop the pan and replace the filter.
Is it cheaper to change transmission fluid at a dealer or an independent shop?
Not always. In Kelley Blue Book's Phoenix figures, independent shops were cheaper for a 2018 Camry and a 2019 Corolla, but for some other cars the two ranges were close or the independent range was higher.
What does Shift Masters charge for a transmission fluid change?
We don't publish prices because the right service depends on your car and the condition of its fluid. We check the fluid and how the car shifts first, then give you a written estimate before any work starts.
