(Deep breath.) If you are reading this, your transmission is probably being rude. It is slipping, or banging into gear, or refusing to find reverse in a crowded parking lot.
Let’s give it a name so we can blame it properly: Gary. Gary is expensive, sure. But Gary is rarely as expensive as the first scary number you heard, and this page shows you why.

How much does a transmission rebuild cost?
Most rebuilds land between $1,500 and $4,500, according to CarParts.com. With removal and reinstall included, CoverageX puts the total at $2,300 to $6,000. (I know. I also had to sit down.)
A rebuild means the transmission comes out, gets taken apart, and every worn or damaged part is replaced before it goes back together to factory specifications. Think of it as a spa weekend for Gary, except the spa is a workbench and the cucumber slices are clutch packs. That is why the price moves so much: two transmissions can look identical outside and need very different parts inside.
People see a $200 rebuild kit online and do the math on a napkin. A technician on CarTalk explained where the rest goes: 4 to 10 hours to pull and reinstall the unit, plus 6 to 8 hours of bench work. (The napkin never includes the bench work. Napkins are optimists.)
And if a quote sounds too good? One mechanic on Reddit told someone quoted $600: “You couldn’t be getting a full rebuild for that price, find out what exactly is included.” Solid advice, delivered with all the warmth of a tax audit.

Not every sick transmission needs a rebuild. Targeted repairs range from a few hundred dollars to around $1,500, per CarParts.com. (This is the part where Gary gets to keep some dignity.)
CoverageX lists a leaking seal or pan at $200 to $500, and a harsh-shifting solenoid job at $800 to $1,500. Those are the “phew” numbers, the ones you mention at dinner first. The catch is that nobody can tell you which number is yours without looking, which is why every job at our shop starts with a transmission diagnosis.
Here is why that matters. Michelle Cosby’s car would not shift into 4th gear and was quoted $5,000 for a rebuild. Mark inspected it, and it needed a fluid flush: in Michelle’s words, it “went from 5k to $500.” (Gary, it turns out, was just thirsty.)
How much does it cost to replace a transmission?
A new transmission averages $2,900 to $7,100, according to Kelley Blue Book. RepairPal puts the average full replacement higher still, at $6,238 to $6,764, with parts making up about $5,110 of that. (Please do not read that number while driving.)
A used unit from a salvage yard is the budget route, at $1,600 to $4,000 with labor, per CoverageX. It is also the mystery-box route, because you are buying a stranger’s transmission and hoping it had a quiet life. Sometimes it did. Sometimes it towed a boat to the lake every weekend and never told anyone.
What is the labor cost to replace a transmission?
Labor usually runs $1,127 to $1,654 on a replacement, according to RepairPal. AutoZone says an automatic takes 6 to 10 hours and a manual 4 to 6, at shop rates of $70 to $150 an hour. (Yes, that is a lot of hours. Gary is not a quick date.)
Why so long? The transmission sits under the car, bolted to the engine, the driveshaft, the cooler lines and a small army of sensors. Getting it out is less “unscrew it” and more “negotiate a hostage release”, and four-wheel-drive trucks take longer still.
How much does a CVT transmission replacement cost?
CVT replacement quotes usually fall between $3,000 and $8,000 for parts and labor, says CarParts.com, partly because many are sold only as complete assemblies. (A CVT is the transmission version of a phone with the battery glued in.)
Can a CVT be rebuilt instead? Many can, and we rebuild them. Whether yours can depends on what failed inside, which is exactly what we check before anyone says a number out loud.
One driver on Reddit was quoted $12,000 on a CVT-equipped Nissan Murano and was told to call an independent transmission shop. We like to think that is us, waving from Phoenix.
Is it cheaper to rebuild or replace a transmission?
Usually, rebuilding is cheaper. Kelley Blue Book ranks a rebuilt transmission as the least costly option and a remanufactured unit as the most expensive. (Finally, a fight where the underdog wins.)
A rebuilt transmission is your own unit, fixed by a local shop. A remanufactured one is restored in a factory to original standards and shipped in, which is why it costs more. (Same idea, fancier passport.) The right call depends on what is broken, how old the car is, and whether Gary is worth saving.

How long does a rebuilt transmission last?
How long a rebuild lasts depends on the quality of the work and how the transmission is looked after. Every rebuild at our shop is covered by our 3 years or 36,000 miles warranty on parts and labor. (That is the warranty talking, not my optimism. I am a transmission guy; optimism did not come in the toolbox.)

Five things move the number. (Six, if you count panic, but panic is free.)
Phoenix adds a sixth: heat. AAA calls heat “a major contributing factor in the breakdown of automatic transmission fluid over time,” and Phoenix logged 54 days at 110°F or hotter in 2023, according to PBS NewsHour figures cited by Endurance. (Gary did not enjoy 2023. Nobody did.)
